The William Gregg VC Cup is named after William Gregg VC who was born on the 27th January 1890 in Heanor and was the recipient of the Victoria Cross. The tournament was first played in the 1930’s and held annually until the late 1990’s.
The football tournament was then brought back in 2015 by Heanor Town Football Club, along with the Royal British Legion. It is an outdoor football competition for primary and junior schools local to Heanor to enter.
There is a great deal of history and sentimental value to the competition, with local residents fondly remembering their own school days. The competition itself is still watched by generations and on the night of the matches you can still hear people reminiscing about their own school football team.
