A tribute to the people of Heanor in recognition of their sacrifice and dedication to the war efforts during WWII

The story of Fallen

Fallen is a sculpture by local artist Andy Mayers, it is a tribute to the people of Heanor in recognition of their sacrifice and dedication to the war efforts during World War Two.
The sculpture was commissioned by Heanor & Loscoe Town Council and is made from Corten steel, a material designed to weather naturally. As it's exposed to the elments, the surface develops a rich, rust-like patina that deepens in colour over the years. This evolving finish not only protects the steel beneath but also mirrors the changing landscape around it - blending art and nature into one living form.

This natural transformation allows the artwork to grow and age alongside its surroundings, echoing the shifting colours of the seasons and the passage of time. The deep tones of corten steel harmonize beautifully with the natural landscape of Heanor Memorial Park.

The sculpture features a father in uniform kissing his child goodbye, against the backdrop of leaves falling from a tree.

The falling leaves symbolise the 137 soldiers from Heanor and surrounding districts who gave their lives during World War Two.

Fallen can be seen in Heanor Memorial Park.
